My Impression of the DCCRGV Job Fair: By Alejandra Perez

Writer: Alejandra SanchezAlejandra Sanchez

The first time I attended a job fair in Hidalgo County, I was representing the nonprofit organization I was leading at the time, which focused on supporting people who are blind, have low vision, and those who assist us. I was pleasantly surprised by how accessible everything was from the start. When I arrived, I was warmly welcomed and directed to my table, where I would be sharing information about this valuable resource. Everything was very well organized.

One section was designated for organizations dedicated to supporting people with different disabilities, both young adults and adults. Our location was excellent, and the arrangement of tables was well thought out. In another area, companies and their recruiters were present. Before the fair, I was asked if I needed any accommodations to make my visit more accessible, and I was given a list of employers who would be attending, which allowed me to prepare in advance. There were also volunteers and sign language interpreters, all very friendly.

I had the opportunity to connect with others who, like me, were part of organizations or were actively job searching. I saw groups of students, well-dressed and guided in their search for internship opportunities. I realized that the fair brought together a diverse group of people, all looking for job opportunities.

At the end of the event, there was a conference featuring different speakers who shared their experiences as employers, employees, and professionals advocating for the rights of people with different abilities. Something I found especially important in the Rio Grande Valley was that the entire event was bilingual. I also noticed local news reporters covering the event, which helps raise awareness about these types of initiatives in our community by bringing them to television and radio audiences.

Overall, it was a very positive experience. Over time, I have attended more job fairs and have noticed how they continue to adapt to people’s needs, always improving based on feedback.
